Yes, I'm a Woman But...Body Hair Does Not Define Me

By Emilie Kvist
Screen printed tshirt, edited photo documentation
16″ x 20″
Not for sale.

Artist Statement:
The silhouette on these t-shirts, make reference to the front cover of classic books like Sense and Sensibility or Jane Eyre. Although the female main characters are set on finding a husband, because these women understand that, as women they have little rights and thus are dependent on finding a husband to survive, it is interesting to note that these women are often seen as slighting rebellious for their time period. With this project I wanted to see how other women feel about the pressure to conform to traditional roles and how they have dealt with it. This project invited a number of women to fill in the remainder of a screen printed t-shirt, and join in on the conversation. After these women wore their shirts, while being posed in positions generally used by male models, thus taking back their dominance. This is an ongoing project, and I am still seeking women of all ages and backgrounds to participate. Please feel free to reach out! I would love to hear your stories!
