Artist Statement:
Garry oaks’ northernmost distribution is in southern Coastal British Columbia. In BC, Garry oak ecosystems are recognized as endangered due to encroachment of urban development. A remnant of this ecosystem can also be found near Hope. This tree stands along an industrial road in North Vancouver. I applied metallic foil to show the thick layer of whitish lichens which all but covers the small oak tree’s lower trunk and 24 carat gold to highlight a few yellow lichens on the bark.
