Quarantine:
My experience in quarantine has been a little bit of peacefulness mixed
with a little bit of anxiety. Makes for an odd combination. The
peacefulness comes from a daily routine and the fact that I live in an
amazingly beautiful place. A year and a half ago we moved to Nanoose Bay
on Vancouver Island and we love it here! We have a small ocean view, I
visit the beach almost daily and we take daily excursions into the 5 kms
of trails located right out our backyard. The anxiety part comes from the
pandemic, obviously. I’m now in my second year as a full-time artist.
Doing art full time as a soul source of income can be intimidating on a
normal day. Now throw in a global pandemic where people are losing jobs,
art galleries are closing, and all my exhibitions that I worked so hard to
arrange are now cancelled! It makes the future of my chosen career look a
little scarier than it did before. Thankfully it is not as bleak as I am
making it sound. I have had some continued art sales and loads of
encouragement along the way. At first I found the anxiety bit to be quite
distracting, but I solved it by taking multiple short breaks when my
concentration was lacking. This allowed me to still keep persevering in my
creative processes. I also chose to spend some time focusing on a series
of smaller paintings to give myself a sense of accomplishing something. I
still worry about what the future may hold for the art business, but I
have the confidence that I will be able to weather this storm, whatever it
may bring.
Artist Statement:
As a realist painter my motivation is to share my visual experiences. To
create paintings that speak both to me and to others about the beauty that
exists in British Columbia. My style invites the viewer to recall their
own past adventures and relive the sights and scents of BC’s natural
environment. Through my artwork I try to bring the outside in, to pay
tribute the natural world and remind us how rewarding it can be to take
the time to reconnect with nature.
