Artist Statement
“I painted this at a time I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed. Where all I really wanted to do was not exist anymore. At the time and position I was in, I thought that if I did not exist, I would be happy, hence why the girl in the picture is smiling. The thought of relief from the pressure of feeling like you’re drowning is dangerous. In this painting I wanted to capture this by creating a character that has a slit throat and is bleeding out into the bathtub. Mascara running, hair flowing, and the big smile that it’s all done. It’s over. Playing off this euphoric feeling that I often would get when I would harm myself. This girl in the painting is tired, she doesn’t want to fight anymore, you can see it in her eyes. If you feel like this or have felt like this, you’re not alone. I love you and I want you to know how much you are needed here; because not giving up was the best decision of my life.”
