Onion - Bob St-Cyr
I am truly grateful that under the self-isolation guidelines issued from the province that I’ve only been inconvenienced by the Covid-19 pandemic of A. D. 2020. I’ve been able to keep myself occupied with work and some small photographic projects. One of the things I enjoy is to visit some of the nearby provincial parks, but when these closed down I simply had to find another creative outlet. To keep the artistic practice going, I made a little home-based photographic project with simply things around like food items. In my case I chose an onion that was starting to grow out from its top. I’ve seen a bit of food photography in the past and thought this would make a good afternoon challenge.

Artist Statement
Borne out of self-isolation, the need to photograph and some aging onions in my pantry, I brought these three elements together one afternoon to try my hand at interpreting a food item using my large format camera loaded with black and white and a little colour transparency sheet film. The day was primarily cloudy with spotty sunshine peeking through from time to time which helped to sculpt the light across the onion surface and provide an overall soft illumination for the scene.

Bob St-Cyr:
I’ve been a fine-art traditional photographer for most of my life and as I matured into my artistic practice I discovered that photography is a therapeutic art, which has become more and more relevant the older I get and the worse the world becomes. I prefer the deliberate act of composing, exposing film and then after processing, interpreting the results on silver-gelatin photographic papers, which is a valuable therapeutic practice.
