Linden Leaf

By Margaret Bremner
Pen and ink, mixed media mounted on birch panel
12″ x 9″, unframed
$250

Artist Statement:
Using techniques such as eco-dyeing, string-pulling, washes, and mono-printing, I create a surface with mysterious markings in which I search for imagery. Inspired by what I notice in the world around me, in these random marks I often find trees, leaves, skies, stones, and buildings. As the imagery is rooted in mystery, the subjects are necessarily abstracted. With mixed media, they become wonky and whimsical and bursting with embellishment. I do not plan the work in advance, preferring to move with inspiration – knowing that there are no mistakes, just opportunities – to convey a joyful spirit through intricate detail, patterning, and color.

Artist Bio:
Margaret Bremner’s joyful abstractions of trees, leaves, skies, and more are rooted in mystery and bursting with intricate embellishment.

She was commissioned, while still a university student, as one of several Canadian artists to illustrate the new Canadian Mass Book (and she’s not even Catholic!). She designed a lamppost banner for the Rideau Business Improvement Association in Ottawa. She has published artwork in numerous magazines, books, and journals, from small black-and-white ‘filler’ art to full-colour covers. Her original works are in over 300 private collections in Canada and elsewhere.

Margaret has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan. Having worked as an artist for decades, and lived across Canada and in China, her art supplies and teapot can currently be found in Surrey, British Columbia where she delights in the weather, her family, and the flora of the lower mainland.
