Forethought/Afterthought 2 - Janet Comer
16×12″, acrylic paint, plastic gems on wood panel, unframed $150
Artist Statement
This mixed media diptych is entitled Forethought/Afterthought. The work consists of acrylic paint, plastic craft gems and glue on two 16×12” wood cradled panels. The juxtaposition of abstract painting and detailed jeweled patterning is an expression of the duality of my life as a full time caregiver to my young children and my part time vocation as an Artist and Art Instructor.
The patterned sides evoke the rigidity of routine and the abstracted side reflects my desire for uninterrupted creativity. Within my practice, I often employ materials that can be found in the craft isles of various stores. These materials are prepackaged and marketed to women specifically. By blurring the boundaries between home crafting and fine art, I am questioning the current place of women in the art world. Are we simply home crafters? Or can we be professional artists?
