Artist Statement:
For this exhibition I decided I wanted to showcase my existing Indigenous designs in a new series. I do most of my Indigenous art digitally, but for this exhibit I hand painted ten of my designs on wood panel creating one-of-a-kind pieces.

Artist Biography:
Chantelle Trainor-Matties is a Canadian artist from British Columbia with Nisga’a and Métis heritage who specializes in illustration, graphic design, and painting. Trainor-Matties works for herself and does freelance work for private and commercial clientele through her small business Frettchan Studios. Her work ranges from bold formline to charming cartoons to painterly realism. She participates in a variety of events such showcases, markets, trade shows and exhibits her work in galleries. Her late ferrets are her main inspiration; other favorite subjects are flora and fauna, pop culture, the macabre and North West Coast art.

Indigenous art has become a huge part of my practice over the last few years. My mother was raised in a time where “it was best” to keep your Indigenous heritage private, this led our family to miss out on this aspect of our lives. Now, we are exploring this together and part of that journey for me is the creation of Indigenous art which has opened a lot of doors for me both in
my practice and my personal journey.
