Artist Statement:
This painting is kind of a self portrait but also a portrait of every brown girl who grew up feeling doubtful about their skin colour. I grew up with people around me who thought that if you have fair skin then only you are beautiful. I found myself looking into the mirror and wondering if everyone around me was right? I am glad that I am at a place now where I feel confident in my skin.
Artist Bio:
Hi! my name is Harman and I am a self taught artist based in Abbotsford, BC. I mostly work with gouache, acrylic gouache, and acrylics. I also dabble in digital art. Growing up I was never into art that much and was more into science. But in 2016, I was not doing so well mentally and I tried venting it all out on paper. I started out art journaling and although my art style was very rough, I found out along the way that painting was the highlight of my day. I kept at it all these years and my style has changed a lot over time. Now here I am, bringing my dream of having a career as an artist, to life. I enjoy painting landscapes and still life studies. I hope my paintings bring you as much joy and calmness as they do to me. Thank you for being here, I really appreciate it!
