Artist Statement:

I am interested in people: how we relate to our environment, how we process and filter things through our own unique bodies, how we are both separate from and part of a larger whole and how we navigate our position and identity in relation to that messy reality.

The work in this exhibition, titled “Echo”, is the culmination of my artist residency with the City of Abbotsford over the summer of 2022. During this residency, I spent considerable time at a variety of local community events outside of a typical artist studio, interacting with and drawing inspiration from those experiences.

Through that time, I became increasingly interested in the complex relationship between the individual and the crowd, how people stand apart from and integrate into their groups and how different facets of who we are emerge based on who we are with and how we are seen. These pieces are meditations and explorations of the fleeting observations and encounters I had in the community. Through each work, I tried to capture a balance of specificity and anonymity, as well as using colours, imagery and materials that referred directly to the environment I was creating in and responding to.
