Artist Statement:
Sometimes we feel like we are going in circles! This is my first larger painting and thence out of my comfort zone. I had sanded it back about 6 times and got a little angry – I guess you would call it a temper tantrum – “Why are you not cooperating with me” I yelled at the piece of wood on the wall in front of me. Then I laughed!!! What am I doing – why am I going in circles!!!
So, I painted circles – which I love to paint and then it came to me – do what you LOVE – it’s not about right or wrong – or will it match the couch – or will someone buy this?????
I sanded it back again and felt that there were too many round shapes to hence the black straight line on the left and some straight orange marks.
AAAAAhhhhhhh! Now we were getting somewhere.
Life is a journey – painting is a journey – not an end for the goal – it is a process and I just have to go through it.
It was delightful painting this piece for you and I hope it brings you as much joy as it has brought me – and insightfulness.
Artist Bio:
I was born and raised in southern Ontario but spent many years in Calgary and now Abbotsford, BC Canada, which has been our family home for the last 16 years.
As a professional social worker, I have also worked in many other fields including fashion design and home décor, manufacturing. And as executive director of two Fraser Valley non-profit organizations. As an artist, I am self trained, with no formal training. I continue to take on-line courses and find my way.
With a deep yearning to be creative and having put my career on hold while devoting time to my two daughters, the COVID lockdown in February 2020 provided me with time to pursue a practice in art. Having watched my mother create amazing watercolour paintings in her retirement has been a strong model to fashioning my coming days.
I really love creating abstract art! It is this artform where I can use my imagination to portray a visual expression of my deepest feelings and emotions. I find it healing and therapeutic. I love shapes and in particular circles and at times get so engrossed in my art that time flies by.
