Artist Statement
The Resurrection series is a continuing series I have been working on in between other collections of work whenever inspiration strikes. Magnolia flowers for me are a representation of hope and beauty in the world. I had never seen them before moving to Abbotsford, and the first time I saw them I was shocked that such a huge beautiful flower could bloom from a tree! The idea of resurrection comes mainly from the influence of my Christian upbringing, where resurrection is a central theme (Jesus rising from the dead being the most obvious.) I continually come back to the idea of life after death in a more figurative sense of hope. For example, when flowers bloom after a long period of death in the winter, or when someone is able to see beauty come out of a long period of hardship. I am drawn to this idea over and over because it doesn’t really make sense for beauty to come out of or despite of pain, and yet it happens, and the magnolias are my reminder of this.
