Artist Statement

Kvist is interested in processed based practices, and using this to her advantage she creates work that merges and sways the boundary of space and form. Kvist often uses materials such as wood or clay that allow her to build up surfaces to create textures that mimic lines and other forms of visual distractions. This piece “Colliding Triangles”, is the second piece in a series of triangular sculptural paintings. When looking at her work viewers may become confused or misled on purpose, as a part of finding the Ah-ha moment of surprise. Like Op-art her work can be enjoyed by a large number of audiences in the public who are driven by curiosity and the element of surprise. Through the use of material based practices concerning form and illusion, Emilie Kvist calls on her viewers to contemplate “Is everything as it seems?” within the space of art itself.

Artist Biography

Emilie Kvist is a mixed media artist, who enjoys working with sculpture, print and installation. She has been producing work in the Fraser Valley since 2015 and will graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Art upon completing her degree at the University of the Fraser Valley in 2021. As an artist she is interested in how the traditional materials of the discipline she works in can be used to create unexpected moments for her viewers. With the aim of creating moments of surprise, she is inspired by other masters of tromp l’oeil like designer Iris Van Herpen and painter Victor Vasarely as well as other optical illusion based methodologies. Inspired by the idea of illusion as a misleading factor, Kvist creates work that combines mediums like sculpture, painting and printmaking to produce a body of work that is situated between two worlds.
