Artist Statement
Summer 2020 is of my kids playing in nature. Motherhood has given me an entirely new lens to view the world. I see each person as a product of their limited experience.
As a mother, I hope to nurture a deep appreciation and respect for the natural world. And as a person of English and Irish heritage living on the unceded territory of the Sema:th and Mathexwí First Nation I feel that I must teach my children understanding of and respect for the history of the place we live.
One of the primary tasks of parenthood is keeping kids safe. By finding a refuge in the outdoors during the forced isolation of summer 2020, we were able to keep on living and be safe. The pandemic has crystallised the importance of family for me. Together we find purpose and joy despite the weight of fear, loneliness, and uncertainty.
Through capturing the vivacious energy of the young humans I care for, I have caught a moment where they are thriving in a time of uncertainty.
