Simultaneity Art Show (SAS) Digital Exhibition: Rebekah Brackett
Artist Statement
Rebekah Brackett is an ally and a POC (Indigenous woman). As a POC and Indigenous woman, As an POC and Indigenous woman I believe that it is my responsibility to be present, be an advocate and lend my voice to the social atmosphere and current movements that are happening. I come from a unique background and have a bit of unique perspective as I belong to the Piikani Nation in Alberta, grew up in Nova Scotia and British Columbia where I experienced both cultures and also from the Sixties Scoop. I am in a place where I can be present in the Arts Community and I know that this is a huge privilege and honour to do so. Shows like this bring light to artists who have barriers and challenges in our society and I do think that it is an honour to be a part of this community and hope that if anything, I can be an example for others to show their work as well.
My work comes out in various forms as I took painting and drawing, sculpture and new media arts through the University of the Fraser Valley. I have always drawn or created since I could hold a pencil and continue to this day. I believe that when an artist creates, a piece of them goes into that painting, drawing etc. Sometimes it’s sadness, sorrow, grief that goes into that work and other times it’s joy, excitement or happiness. Regardless, this has helped me evolve as an artist to where I am today.
I am inspired by all the environments that I’ve explored and lived. From the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific and things that I have seen along the way. I’m inspired by my family and friends, by my sweet husband and even our cats. These are all my muse, channeled usually with music and expelled through my pen or brush.
