Artist Statement
THE DEVIL explores the articulation of brown femininity and the trauma within the dynamics presented in the displacement as a multicultural identity. Utilizing the wide range of expression to discuss the ongoing separation of cultural disintegration and to address the aesthetics of western ideologies in creating a safe space as an interaction of a shared narrative.
Artist Bio
Mani Dhanoa is first-generation Canadian artist currently residing on the unceded territories of Á,LEṈENEȻ ȽTE (W̱SÁNEĆ), Coast Salish, Kwantlen, sc̓əwaθenaɁɬ təməxʷ (Tsawwassen), S’ólh Téméxw (Stó:lō), sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), and Stz’uminus land and currently pursuing multidisciplinary practices as a student at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Their work addresses the complexities of the representation of their transnational identity as a queer South Asian, the everyday belonging of intimate spaces, and challenging the post-colonial displacement of their heritage. Using various forms of mediums, such as painting, photography, ceramics, mixed media, sound, new media, and film; they collect reminiscences of the intelligence passed down to them to create a figurative depiction of embodiment as a response to counter the contemporary world.
